What is lutein?
Lutein is a natural carotenoid that cares for clearer and sharper vision as well as general eye health and function. It is synthesized by the eye retina as a pigment and protects the eyes from harmful free radicals. It absorbs excess light energy and protects plants from light rays. It protects the eyes in exactly the same way. It is used by the body as an antioxidant that absorbs blue light. It is suitable for people who suffer from nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. It successfully strengthens the capillary vessels, prevents the formation of thrombi in the retina, supports the functions of the macula and relatively slows down the processes of eye degeneration.
Where is lutein found?
Lutein is found in the back inner lining of the eye (the retina), the lens, the optic nerve and the macula. The macula is a small area of the retina where the beam of light entering the eye is concentrated. The macula is responsible for visual acuity. Since the amount of lutein in the body is not sufficient, it needs to be added from the outside. Main plant sources of lutein are parsley, cabbage, spinach, turnips, zucchini, broccoli, pumpkin, Brussels sprouts and others. Other good sources are orange juice, cantaloupe, red peppers, pumpkin and grapes. Lutein can also be obtained from dietary supplements. More information and trivia about lutein can be read here.
What is diabetic retinopathy?
In people with diabetes, one of the most sensitive organs is the eye. It has very small blood vessels that are susceptible to damage from high blood sugar. In other words – every person with diabetes mellitus is closer to the possibility of impairing or losing their vision. Persistently high blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are the main causes of diabetic retinopathy. This is also the reason why approximately 1/3 of people with diabetes suffer from this eye disease. This is also the reason why approximately 1/3 of people with diabetes suffer from this eye disease. All this happens because elevated blood sugar causes glycation, a process that creates unbreakable bonds between nearby protein and sugar molecules. This usually leads to the formation of new structures that cause the collagen in the small blood vessels in the eyeball to harden. All these processes lead to reduced vision, blurred vision or even complete blindness.Diabetic retinopathy can be prevented or delayed by monitoring and maintaining normal blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and body weight.
How does lutein affect diabetic retinopathy?
Lutein is known as a quality helper in vision disorders, as it helps to strengthen the capillaries and prevent the formation of thrombi in the retina. It is an effective neutralizer of free radicals and plays an important role as an antioxidant. Lutein is a kind of protector of the eyes – it helps in the adaptation of vision to light and darkness, relieves the syndrome of “tired eyes”, especially during intensive work with a computer and in artificial lighting.
Another of its properties is protection from damage to the eyes when taking medicines, polluted air, cigarette smoke and UV rays. It has a significant role in suppressing retinal oxidative damage and abnormalities associated with diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of acquired blindness in people under the age of 65, and the disease has been shown to lead to a higher risk of various eye diseases. If you have diabetes, don’t wait for vision to worsen before taking action. Timely supplementation with various supplements and trace elements has been proven to prevent or at least significantly slow down the development of diabetes complications. Lutein is a typical example of a helper in combating the consequences of prolonged high blood sugar levels, as it strengthens the visual apparatus and contributes to good and clear vision.
