Every second woman suffers from a urinary tract infection (most often cystitis) at least once in her life. Then frequent visits to the toilet are the least of our problems. What is cystitis and how to get rid of it?! A short story about the struggle between cystitis and nature, which always provides good opportunities to deal with infections and inflammations.

What is cystitis?

Cystitis – common and difficult to eliminate, has always been and continues to be a serious cause of discomfort for many women and men around the world. Yes, that’s right – in fact, cystitis also occurs in men. But due to anatomical differences between the two sexes, women suffer from cystitis 30 times more often than men. The female urinary tract is much shorter (4 cm) than the male (20 cm), which predisposes various microorganisms to easily enter through it and infect the bladder.

Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder, usually caused by a bacterial infection. Depending on the duration of this inflammation, cystitis is conditionally divided into acute and chronic. The more common of the two types is acute cystitis, the causative agent of which in 80-90% of cases is usually bacteria of the genus E. coli (Escherichia coli). The bacterium normally inhabits the large intestine, but when it enters the urinary tract, it quickly begins to multiply and causes cystitis. These “uninvited guests” of the urinary tract cause symptoms such as:

  • frequent urges to urinate
  • pain and burning when urinating
  • pain and discomfort in the lower abdominal area
  • cloudy urine and others

Acute cystitis can quickly become chronic if proper and timely treatment is not undertaken. Chronic cystitis causes extreme discomfort. In addition to significantly impairing the quality of life, the treatment of chronic cystitis is a long and difficult process, so it is important to pay attention to time.

The good helper or what is buchu?

In the war against cystitis, everyone knows the power of the cranberry. The Balkan countries also know other herbs to help against inflammation. However, have you heard of a very good helper in the fight against cystitis, the buchu plant (Barosma betulina)? Buchu, better known and used in traditional South African medicine, is a beautiful, evergreen, bushy plant. The leaves are the part of the plant that is used for medicinal purposes. An interesting fact is the strong aroma, which is similar to mint.

There are over 150 varieties of buchu that grow in South Africa, but the most common of them are Barosma betulina and Barosma crenulate. The main use of the plant is for urinary tract infection and inflammation, although in the past, the leaves of the herb were also used to treat digestive problems, coughs and colds. In Europe, evidence of buchu’s power came as early as 1821, when it was listed in the British Pharmacopoeia as a treatment for cystitis, urethritis (inflammation of the urinary tract) and nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys). A few years later – as far back as 1847, the herb was presented to American doctors as a universal medicine for the therapy of kidney diseases, thanks to its properties as a natural diuretic.

On the fight between buchu and cystitis.

The power of buchu manifests itself in several places. On the one hand, buchu has an anti-inflammatory effect. It is due to the presence of the active ingredients hesperidin and limonene. They have been found to reduce the formation of inflammatory molecules, thus relieving all the symptoms associated with it – especially the pain, burning, discomfort.

Another beneficial effect of buchu is its antibacterial activity. As it turned out, cystitis is an infection most often caused by bacteria. These bacteria have the ability to reproduce. The effect of buchu is due to blocking their reproduction and leading them to their death. Buchu has a proven effect against a number of bacteria threatening the health of the urinary tract, but most strongly against E. coli.

Last but not least, buchu also exhibits a diuretic effect (stimulation of urine production), which is due to the content of the so-called flavonoids in the herb. Flavonoids are the active ingredients in the extract that have the property of increasing urine production and stimulating the natural defenses of the urinary tract. This property of buchu is very important, because in this way the bladder can be cleansed of accumulated bacteria.

Buchu – the perfect weapon in the fight against cystitis.

Through natural, safe and effective natural products, the fight against urinary tract and kidney infections can be much more successful. Buchu is the herb that should become part of your arsenal in the fight against infections of the excretory system. You can combine buchu with other natural and local extracts that have been shown to be effective against urinary tract and kidney infections, such as cranberry and gooseberry.

Cystitis and good hygiene – where is the limit and when do we overdo it?

Maintaining good intimate hygiene is extremely important for women. Taking good care of this delicate area helps prevent inflammation, infections, unpleasant odors and is certainly one of the ways to prevent cystitis and urinary tract infections. Are there cases, however, in which we can overdo the hygiene? And what could this lead to?

Diet for cystitis

Cystitis occurs more often in women than in men (yes, men also suffer from cystitis), due to some anatomical features – the urinary tract of ladies is much shorter, which facilitates the penetration of bacteria. Cystitis is mainly caused by bacteria, and in most cases it is the bacterium E. coli. However, cystitis can also develop from taking certain drugs (mostly those that weaken our immune system), during radiation treatment in the pelvic area (radiation kills cancer cells, but also damages some healthy cells of the mucosa) , in the presence of a foreign body (for example, a catheter in which bacteria enter mechanically), as a complication of diabetes and others.
